2. Camerone Farm
11-16 December 1944
On 11 December, elements of Combat Command n°4 of the 5th Armoured Division, composed of 2nd Battalion, Marching Regiment of the Foreign Legion and 4th Squadron, 1st Cuirassiers Regiment, re-launched an attack from the lower part of the village of Orbey.
They seized the houses at the bottom of the village but were held up at the mill. The Legionnaires dug in at Camerone Farm and set up a defensive position with two Tank Destroyers from 3rd Squadron, 11thAfrican Chasseurs Regiment, the “Vaux” and the “Souville”.
Commanded by Captain GUIBERT, 4th Squadron, 1st CR, having lost several Sherman tanks, set up a defensive position at each of the farms along the road up to the bridge, which had been destroyed. After evacuating the wounded from his squadron, Captain GUIBERT took refuge in Camerone Farm with Lieutenant HALLO’s section of Legionnaires.
On the night of 13 December, after an artillery barrage, cadets from the German officer school launched a violent counterattack. After several hours of fighting and several assaults, the Legionnaires, supported by the “Souville” tank of the 11th ACR, repelled the attackers and held the position.
